In the 2019 year on October WTA detached Istanbul from the tennis schedule, but it was decided to re-add the competition in the schedule 2020.

The WTA said, With the support of the management of the Octagon, WTA tennis will return to the Turkish city in the form of an international tournament at the Turkish Tennis Federation Tennis Center this year. 

WTA CEO Steve Simon said: Istanbul is the venue for many WTA events. As we embark on an exciting new season, we are very happy to continue hosting the world's best tennis players in Istanbul. 

Cengiz Durmus, President of the Turkish Tennis Federation, also said: "We are very happy to declare the new WTA International Championship in Istanbul and look forward to welcoming players and fans to the Turkish Tennis Federation Tennis Center.

The first time in 2005 the Istanbul played the WTA international event on the clay court and the winner of this tournament was Venus Williams. From 2009 to 2015, it used to be a hard surface tennis court, then in 2016, it switched to a clay surface again.
