In 1987 the Linz Open was started in Wels, Austria, and was organized by the ITF (International Tennis Federation) as a $10,000 competition. The Linz Open became a WTA Tour tournament on the Tier V-level in 1991.
The Linz Open was promoted to a third-level event in 1993, and it became a 2nd-level tournament in 1998. Linz Open Tennis has been designated as a WTA International Tournament since 2009.
The tournament is called the Upper Austria Ladies Linz 2019, and currently, this event is sponsored by Generali Gruppe.
